The Dark Academia side quest is one of the many pieces of side content available in The Edge of Fate. There's plenty of side content so it's worth checking it out while you try to complete the main campaign.
With that said, let's take a look at how to progress through the Dark Academia quest in Destiny 2.
How to unlock Dark Academia quest
The quest will be unlocked once you finish the Morphology mission that's part of the Outer Steppes Strangelet quest, which is required to complete Step 19 of the main quest (you don't need to actually complete the entire Outer Steppes quest, just up until the Morphology mission.

The quest can be started by using the Curtilage Divide landing zone and heading to Augur's Bethel.

Time to open the door
How to open the door in the Dark Academia quest
So the first big hurdle is trying to open the door that will lead you to the actual quest. In the room you're in, there are three arc generators you need to overcharge.
The first one will be near the locked door, right below the stairs leading you to the center of the room.

For the second and third ones, you'll need to use your newly acquired Matter Realignment ability. To obtain it, use the stairs and get to the other side of the room. Look up and you should see a small platform.
Keep climbing onto the pipeline and walk right until you see another set of pipes leading left, follow this path to reach the Matter Realignment power up.
Time to use some Kepler power ups
Now that you've activated it, head back the way you came from using the pipes and look down. You'll notice a structure that can be displaced with your ability; the second generator will be found behind it.
Use your Jedi-like powers
After you've shot the second generator, move to the right following the pipeline, and you'll run into a second structure that can also be moved with the Matter Realignment. Hit the third generator, and you'll bring down the shield that was protecting the small pylon you need to power up using the Matterspark ability.
Third and final one
To find the Matterspark, on that same pipeline path you took to hit the third generator, go all the way to the other side. It'll be tucked away between three pipelines.
Time to open the door
Now, you'll get into the actual quest.
Step 1: Scour the area for information
This step is very simple; once you open the door, you'll have to scan some remains, interact with a shrine, and pick up an Aionian device.
If you can't do either of them, the quest might be bugged. That happened to me. Progress through the main quest until you reach step 22, and it should be fixed.
Step 2: Return the strange device you found to the Aionian encampment in the Caldera
Easy enough, pick up the round sphere that's on the ground and that should lead you to the final step.
Step 3: Head back to Caldera
Talk to the Dean to complete the quest.
