Splitgate 2 made a big splash during the Summer Game Fest after the announcement that the game would be getting a free battle royale mode, giving fans extra incentive to play this shooter.

While the mode is far from original, it won't be a bad thing if it plays well and has fair rewards for all kinds of players.

The actual announcement of this battle royale mode was mixed, as players didn’t like how 1047 CEO Ian Proulx slammed other FPS games before announcing this mode. Proulx claims he was a fan of old-school FPS games and doesn’t like the current direction their taking, hence making Splitgate 2. It was done in poor taste, and his choice of hat didn’t help things.

However, stealth dropping the new mode has received some positive reactions from fans. It was a bit tone deaf since the battle royale genre has arguably been overdone, with Fortnite and Apex Legends being the only relevant entries in recent memory. Still, there’s always room for a third place title, and this free-to-play shooter from 1047 could pull that off.

Because the mode and this game are free, fans who are curious can check it out now and see if the game is up to their liking. Fans who’ve played the shooter seem to enjoy the mix of shooting and portal throwing. It’s literally like Valve’s single-player Portal game, but with insane weapons to use.

Splitgate 2’s battle royale mode is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. It’s part of the main game and players won’t have to pay extra for it.
