
Phone reviewers settled this argument years ago: agree on what to measure, then everybody reports the same things. Monitors never got that discipline. Buying guides still hand you a spec sheet, a price, and a shrug.
So here are three criteria instead. No lab was harmed making this. Every figure below is somebody else's published measurement, applied the same way down the list.
Test one is motion: how many frames the glass can show before it starts throwing them away. Test two is detail: what a single still frame is worth in density, panel type and brightness. Test three is static-pixel endurance: whether a bright, unchanging layout can sit there for hours without wearing, dimming, or glaring back at you.
A permanent HUD does it. So does a taskbar you never hide, or an all-day white document. Slots and live tables do it hardest, the layout barely moving all evening.
Test One: Motion, Or The Frames Your Card Already Has
The games: Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, Fortnite, Call of Duty MW3, Marvel Rivals.
A 2026 RTX 5090 review put Valorant at 924 fps average at 1440p and flatly called that perfect for 500Hz. Counter-Strike 2 sits comfortably past 400 fps, though published figures swing hard between rigs.
The heavier shooters read differently. The same review has Fortnite at 156 fps at 4K on Epic, against 119 fps on the last-generation RTX 4090, and Call of Duty MW3 at 187 fps at 4K.
Scope the verdict. At competitive settings and 1440p the card stops being the bottleneck and the glass takes over. At 4K on Epic it flips back, which is why the heavy shooters belong in test two. Pouring 924 fps into a 60Hz office panel is buying a track car for the school run.
Top of the board: ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDP, 27 inches of WOLED at 2560 x 1440 and 480Hz, roughly $650 to $850. The LG UltraGear 27GX790A-B matches that refresh, adds DisplayHDR True Black 400, and lands near $468 to $610 on deal. Value pick.
The Alienware AW2725DF costs about the same, $500 to $650, and spends it differently: QD-OLED colour at 360Hz rather than 480Hz. A panel-type choice, not a cheaper one.
Hold that result. Those three are the most exposed panels on test three: all OLED, and OLED under a bright static layout is the hard case.

Test Two: Detail, Or What A Single Frame Is Worth
First the objection, because 4K used to be a slideshow. Forza Horizon 6, out 19 May 2026, native at 4K with ray tracing maxed, has an RTX 5090 at about 70 to 72 fps in the technical analysis.
Switch on DLSS 4 Quality with x4 Multi Frame Generation, a 50 series feature, and the same card goes past 300 fps at 4K.
Doom went the same way. Revelations landed on 7 July 2026 with six new levels and a Chain Spear. Path traced and maxed with DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation, NVIDIA puts an RTX 5090 at up to 310 fps at 4K and 375 fps at 1440p, rising to around 500 fps at the highest MFG multiplier.
Those are upscaled and generated frames, not raw rendering. They answer one narrow question, 4K is drivable now, and nothing about the picture. So measure the picture.
Density first. 3840 x 2160 across 32 inches is a far finer grid than 2560 x 1440 across 27, and that 4K in a 27 inch panel is finer still. Not frame rate: that is why the 480Hz winners lose here.
Brightness second. Tom's Hardware measured 1,300 nits peak in a 3% window on a QD-OLED against only 300 to 500 nits at full field, so a small highlight holds detail a bright whole screen cannot.
Certification third: the 27GX790A-B is the one screen here with a stated DisplayHDR True Black 400 rating.
Top of the board: MSI MPG 321URX, 32 inches of 3840 x 2160 QD-OLED at 240Hz for about $830. ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM runs that recipe near $899, Samsung's Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD) covers $750 to $890, and the Gigabyte MO27U2 puts the same 4K into 27 inches for $650, the densest grid per dollar.
All OLED again, so carry the asterisk forward.
Refuse to pick? The dual-mode LG UltraGear 32GS95UE takes tests one and two on one panel: 4K at 240Hz for the pretty nights, 1080p at 480Hz when ranked calls. Refusing costs about USD 1,000 to 1,200, roughly double the Alienware, and its street price moves more than the rest, so price it at a Canadian retailer rather than converting.

Test Three: Static-Pixel Endurance, Or The Hours Nobody Benchmarks
Scale first, because buying guides treat this as a rounding error. In Ontario, the largest regulated online market in Canada, casino play runs at roughly 80 percent of online gambling revenue and sports betting takes most of what is left. No published Canadian breakdown separates desktop from phone, so treat the desktop share as a minority rather than a measured number. This is what that minority does to a desktop panel.
A Pragmatic Play reel, and that studio alone fields 400 plus titles, is a bright high-contrast board with a 2 to 5 second spin cycle and one input. Evolution live tables are fixed-camera HD broadcast at 30 to 60 fps.
Now the physics. OLED subpixels age faster when driven bright for long periods, so a fixed bright layout wears the same shapes unevenly. Slot and lobby UI is the sharpest version of that load, not the only one.
Remember the full-field ceiling from test two. A bright static lobby is that case, which makes it the dimmest thing your panel ever does.
The mitigations are real and now mostly standard. A 2026 cross-brand warranty survey finds 3 years including panel burn-in has become the desktop OLED norm, naming Dell/Alienware, ASUS, MSI, Acer, AOC and selected Samsung Odyssey models.
ASUS covers burn-in from the PG32UCDM onward, eleven older ROG OLEDs still on 2 years, plus OLED Care Pro: pixel cleaning, pixel shift, a proximity sensor that goes black when you leave. LG puts a 3 year burn-in warranty on UltraGear OLED. Alienware adds AI pixel management and graphite heat dispersion.
So the separator is glare handling and full-field brightness, not paperwork. An evening in the Shuffle Casino lobby hands a panel one bright art direction after another, a high volatility reel, then felt under studio lights, then whatever has a wheel bolted to it.
Colour-true and low-glare is what keeps that honest: gold that reads as gold, felt that reads as felt, no ceiling lamp parked in the middle of the table. The picture is the half you get to choose.
Top of the board: LG UltraGear 32GS95UE, whose AGLR low-reflection finish is the most underrated feature in any room with lamps in it. It answers the glare half without giving something back elsewhere.
The Gigabyte MO27U2 is the cheap way in at about $650, but these sources list no coating, no full-field figure and no warranty term. That gap is buying information too.
If your room is genuinely bright, or your hours genuinely static-heavy, nobody should shame you out of IPS. No organic subpixels to wear out. The Dell UltraSharp U2723QE is the honest version: 27 inches of 3840 x 2160 IPS, $510 to $640, and 60Hz, which loses tests one and two outright.

Pick The Test That Owns Your Hours
Two settings regardless: variable refresh rate wherever your frame rate sits under the panel ceiling, and on test one, where it does not, a frame cap just under the maximum with low-latency mode.
Then read the cable version, not the plug shape. DisplayPort 2.1 was published by VESA in 2022 and reaches 80 Gbps, while HDMI 2.1 has carried 48 Gbps since 2017. An older cable caps what you paid for.
None of these panels is the best monitor. Each is the best answer to one of three tests. Score your own week honestly, find the test that eats the most hours, and buy that column.
