Fans said it couldn’t be done, but reliable rumors point to an upcoming SEGA and Epic Games collaboration that will bring Sonic and Shadow to Fortnite.
For years, insiders reported that negotiations between both companies had broken down over a rather bizarre dispute: Sonic’s proportions. SEGA allegedly didn’t want Epic to reshape the Blue Hedgehog’s iconic figure; however, the Fortnite developers do need to set a standard for skins, as having a smaller one could lead to potential competitive issues.
All that seems to be fixed, as we might finally get cosmetics inspired by one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world. Here’s what we know about the Sonic x Fortnite
Is Sonic coming to Fortnite?
Yes, although there’s no confirmation or leaks of a proper skin for Sonic. Leakers did manage to get their hands on Sonic and Shadow-inspired kicks, which will release in the coming weeks.
Kicks are shoe cosmetics that have been a source of controversy, as they simply feel like a surreal cash grab instead of a cosmetic with more value, like a full skin, an emote, back bling, or a glider.
Of course, fans aren’t losing hope that the Sonic x Fortnite collaborations amount to overpriced digital shoes, and that actual skins come with the crossover.
SEGA is one of the few major studios in the gaming industry that has yet to make its characters playable in Epic Games’ battle royale. Having Sonic would make Fortnite become an even greater crossover that already features characters from Xbox, PlayStation, Bungie, Capcom, CD Projekt Red, Ubisoft, Riot Games, and more.
