Bungie has confirmed that starting with The Edge of Fate expansion, Destiny 2 will no longer have paywalls for seasonal content. That's right, all seasonal content moving forward will be free for all players.
In perhaps the best news the community could have received, the developers explained that they didn't want to continuously split the activities they had at their disposal with each new content drop.
The Edge of Fate will mark a new era for the looter shooter. Not only is this the start of a fresh multi-year storyline, but it'll also be a massive shift for Bungie's content delivery schedule, as two (smaller) expansions will be released per year, rather than a single one.
As broken down by the developers themselves during The Edge of Fate reveal stream, both 2025 expansions (Edge of Fate and Renegades) will ship with one major update and two reward passes. While the reward passes might still be a separate purchase, every seasonal content will be free.
The Year of Prophecy roadmap
The current format had players criticizing Bungie for overly monetizing every aspect of the game. Dungeon keys were sold separately from the yearly DLC expansions (unless you bought the deluxe edition, which gave you every piece of content, provided you paid a hefty sum upfront). Seasons had Guardians forking out cash every few months as well.
Now that it seems Destiny 2 will look to streamline its monetization strategy, giving players access to everything an expansion has to offer without consistently opening up their wallets, it looks like Bungie can start building goodwill with the community once more.
The Edge of Fate, the first expansion of the Fates Saga, is set to launch on July 15. Renegades, its follow-up, is set to arrive on December 2.
