What is EOMM in Marvel Rivals?

My win-loss record isn't my fault, it's just EOMM's artistic expression.

Matchmaking plays a huge role in any competitive shooter, and Marvel Rivals is no less. A term you might have heard of when discussing matchmaking is EOMM, i.e., a system designed to influence the difficulty of your next match based on previous performance.

While this is often debated among competitive players, understanding EOMM could help you understand why some matches feel like a battle and others like a breeze. Continue as we have a closer look at what EOMM means and how it works in Marvel Rivals.

EOMM stands for Engagement Optimized Matchmaking, a system that can keep players engaged for as long as possible instead of ensuring entirely fair matches. It uses behavioral data, including win/loss streaks, play time, and play habits, instead of focusing completely on skill-based matchmaking.

In practice, if you have been losing several matches in a row, EOMM could assign you easier opponents or stronger partners to help you win and stay motivated. On the other hand, if you have been winning too often, it could match you against our other players or assign your partners to increase the difficulty. While it's cool to keep the game interesting, it can result in uneven matches.

Does Marvel Rivals actually use EOMM?

Developers of Marvel Rivals, NetEase, haven't ever officially confirmed the use of EOMM in the game. However, several players claim to have detected engagement-based matchmaking patterns, including unbalanced teams, forced win/loss streaks, and sudden difficulty spikes.

The speculation increased because NetEase has already used engagement-focused matchmaking in its other titles. Still, in a recent interview with the Rivals Assembled YouTube channel, creative director Guangguang denied that Marvel Rivals uses EOMM. He further said that NetEase intends to broadcast a video within two weeks describing how matchmaking works and addressing community questions.
